The Belgian government is going to work with the CO2 Performance Ladder
Until 2022, the Flemish government is experimenting with the CO2 performance ladder for public procurement. In concrete terms, companies that reduce their CO2 emissions will have a greater chance of winning government contracts.
After transport, buildings are the largest source of CO2 in Flanders. The Flemish government has already taken numerous measures to reduce the CO2 emissions of buildings. Flemish Prime Minister Geert Bourgeois now wants to go a step further, together with the Walloon government, with the introduction of a CO2 performance ladder for large government contracts.
Prime Minister Bourgeois: “The Flemish government has great leverage in the form of the many government contracts that we outsource. With this CO2 performance ladder, we are now taking an additional measure to stimulate CO2 reductions in the construction sector. We are testing the application of the performance ladder for large projects with a three-year pilot phase and will then make a decision about the structural implementation ”
