CO₂ Performance Ladder Expands to Germany, Partnering with CSCP to Promote Sustainable Procurement

Germany is the latest country to adopt the CO2 Performance Ladder, a key tool for sustainable procurement and carbon emission reduction. This innovative tool, already a success in the Netherlands, Belgium, and beyond, is now being rolled out in Germany with the national coordination led by the Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP).

Driving Sustainability in Public Procurement

The CO2 Performance Ladder, developed by the Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement and Business (SKAO), serves as both a management system and a procurement instrument, helping organizations reduce their carbon footprint and achieve sustainability goals. By using the Ladder, businesses can gain competitive advantages in public tenders by demonstrating their commitment to CO2 reduction, fostering innovation, and improving supply chain sustainability.

Cristina Fedato, Head of Sustainable Infrastructure, Products and Services at CSCP, emphasizes the value of the Ladder: “The CO2 Performance Ladder allows public authorities to harness their purchasing power to not only drive emissions reductions but also to encourage suppliers to improve their sustainability strategies. It’s a proven tool that enhances trust and contributes to public climate goals.”

CSCP Takes Lead as National Coordinator

As of August 2024, CSCP has assumed responsibility for guiding the CO2 Performance Ladder’s integration into public tenders across Germany, joining a group of countries like France, Ireland, and the UK that are already implementing the tool. The first pilot projects in Germany are expected to begin soon, with the aim of establishing a robust framework for sustainable procurement across various sectors.

Aligning with European Climate Goals

The introduction of the Ladder in Germany aligns with the broader European commitment to meet climate targets and promote green public procurement. This expansion provides an opportunity for both public and private organizations in Germany to take concrete steps toward carbon neutrality by integrating sustainability into procurement decisions.
